“Paul Boutin, a freelance writer for Wired News and Salon, says part of the problem was caused by the relentlessly cheery mood of the press in the 1990s. “You never got in trouble for hyping a company in the late ’90s,” he says. “Now, in the 2000s, you can’t be too negative, and if you write anything positive you’re looked at askance.”
